Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens are a nu folk band created by singer-songwriter Julia Johnson, hailing from Canberra, Australia but currently located in Berlin, Germany. Combining a menagerie of traditional folk instruments with a heavy dose of pop sensibility, the band’s second album Family Pets was released to critical acclaim in Australia and overseas in 2013. The two singles Little Surprises and Adeleine which were lifted from the album have both received national airplay on community stations and TripleJ. In 2014 the band toured their stand alone single Lake George nationally, in the band’s most comprehensive tour to date.

Highlights of Julia’s career include a songwriting masterclass with Grammy and ARIA winner Wally de Backer (Gotye), and playing alongside internationally acclaimed acts including Courtney Barnett, Newton Faulker, Wendy Matthews and Tim Rogers (You Am I).

Currently Julia is based in Berlin, working on new material and doing some low-key performances.

“Oh this is so great. Love the playful guitar plucking and that lilt of Julia’s voice. Beautiful tune.” – Zan Rowe, triple j

“Whether staring in the face of adversity, or playing coy, flirting with the danger of romance, Julia Johnson presents a fantastic sophomore record drenched in rustic textures that perfectly capture the suburban Australian woes and triumphs she has come to love to celebrate. An illustrious second outing that will certainly find itself a home within the Australian musical cannon; for lovers of Sarah Blasko’s ‘The Sea Wants What The Sea Will Have’ and Nick Caves ‘The Boatmans Call’, this is an album for you.” – Somethingyousaid.com

Johnson’s voice mirrors the slow but treacherous currents of a mountain river. –  The Canberra Times

Family Pets is an exceptionally accomplished album of wisely written, intricately orchestrated, skilfully executed and masterfully produced folk songs that linger long in the mind after listening… It is Julia’s ingenious songwriting that makes Family Pets more than the sum of its parts and an album in the true sense of the word. – BMA

Despite her youth Johnson’s music is delivered with a depth and worldliness more befitting an older singer-songwriter. – Timber and Steel
